Essex Intermediate School

Dear Essex Intermediate School Students, Parents, and Community Members,

I want to warmly welcome each of you to the 2017-2018 school year at Essex Intermediate School!  This year we will continue to work together with all of our stakeholders to create Pathways to Excellence for our students.  I look forward to partnering with our dedicated staff, our families, and our community members to ensure a positive and productive year together.

At EIS, we are very excited to welcome the 4th grade students, parents, and teachers to our school this year.  With the addition of the 4th grade to EIS, we will be a true “Intermediate School”, where we are able to focus on instructional strategies and social skills supports specific to the intermediate grades.  This includes providing structured, elementary support in 4th and 5th grade, and providing more young adult support (peer relations, transition to high school) in the 6th and 7th grade.

This fall, we will kick-off a new Watch D.O.G.S. program at EIS.  Watch D.O.G.S is a one-of-a-kind, school-based, father involvement program that works to support education and safety.  Watch D.O.G.S. are fathers, grandfathers, step-fathers, uncles, and other father-figures who volunteer to serve at least one day a year at their child’s school.  Watch D.O.G.S. is one of the nation’s largest and most respected school-based, family, and community engagement, organizations in the country.  We are very excited to bring this program to EIS through a grant from our PTO.  We will kick off our Watch D.O.G.S. program with a pizza dinner and sign-up night for our students and their father figures on Monday, October 16th at 6:00 PM.  Please plan to join us to find out more information about the Watch D.O.G.S program and to sign up as a volunteer!

The Watch D.O.G.S. program is a part of our overall focus to ensure our parents are actively involved in our school.  We want, we need, and we value your involvement and support in your child’s education.  This involvement is the key to the success of our students during their intermediate school years.

I believe teamwork and open communication are vital to a child’s success, and I know that together we will work to ensure a positive and productive learning environment for our students.  Please feel free to contact me at (804) 443-3040 or with any questions.  I want to thank each of you for the opportunity to work with your children every day.  I am truly honored and humbled to be entrusted with this responsibility.  Together we can make each day a great day of learning for each child.

Best regards,

Heather Gentry
